| DMusic is a collaborative art form - - as any successful artist will attest. No matter how brightly a star shines, beyond the glare is a group of talented musicians, helping to hold that star in orbit. That is why when superstars of Pop, R&B and Soul need the best rhythm guitar player available, they call on David Williams. Even the publicly acclaimed “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson, has come to rely on William’s formidable talents. Music has always been a part of William’s life. Born in Virginia and schooled in Jazz on the works of Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery, one of his first professional gigs was with the legendary group The Dells. He toured with them extensively, until the Vietnam War took him off the road and into a much different tour of duty. He served until 1972 and once out knew Los Angeles was the place to pickup where he had left off musically. He worked more with The Dells and word began to spread about this young, fresh talent. The Temptations asked him to join their backup band and he was delighted to accept. He also found time to found his own band, Chanson, and score a top ten pop hit, Don’t Hold Back a song that showcased his writing and vocal abilities as well. He became an in-demand road and studio musician, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise when Quincy Jones called and asked him to come over to the studio. When Williams arrived, he was shocked to see Michael Jackson in the booth with Quincy. Once Michael and Quincy heard Williams play, they were convinced he was the one for the job. Since then Williams has performed on the “Off The Wall,” “Thriller,” “Triumph,” “Victory,” “Bad” and “Dangerous” albums the most successful albums in recorded history. Michael was even quoted as saying “I can hardly work without you. This is further evidenced by Michael using Williams not only on vinyl, but on stage as well. Williams has toured with the icon of Pop extensively, including the recent “Dangerous” tour and the appearance at the Super Bowl 1993 the most watched television event in the last twenty years. Playing and performing with and on the most successful records and tours in history should be enough for anyone: not Williams. The list of credits doesn’t stop there. From coordinating the musicians for Madonna’s 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour, to writing and/or producing cuts for Earth, Wind & Fire, The Jacksons, George Howard and Boz Scaggs (to name a few), Williams has established himself as not only a guitar player of unequaled talent, but a succinct writer, producer, artist and vocalist. The list of artists for which Williams has performed along with #1 songs (mixed with his production credits) is so lengthy and impressive that it has been kept separate due to space! All of this experience has moved Williams towards the most obvious progression a solo deal as an artist AND a production company. Williams has crafted a solo album on which he wrote, produced and arranged all of the material. He called upon the cream of Los Angeles’ session scene, including Brenda Russell, Maurice White, Pat Leonard, the André Crouch Singers, Jeff Porcaro and John Robinson. The album allows Williams to showcase all of his talents, including his dynamic singing voice. The album is refreshing and musically stimulating. However, even that is not enough for this industry dynamo. His production company, Jamic Entertainment Group, is helmed by Maurice white, Anthony Campbell and himself, and has already aggressively set out to find and develop new artists. Always challenging the limits, Williams and partners plan to produce, market and promote young talent and press and distribute the product themselves, transporting him from musician to music label executive. By assembling a company that is comprised of both renowned musical talents and solid business professionals and adding to that the fact that David and Maurice together have helped amass more than 100 million in records sales worldwide Jamic should quickly become a distinguished enterprise in the entertainment industry. Just another hat to wear, proving true talent can only grow. Williams has pressed onward to carve an indelible niche in the music industry. He has risen to the top in his field, and will now undoubtedly duplicate that success with his own album and production company. How does he do it? “I’m a very positive person, and very self-reliant,” he says. “I don’t lean on anything except God and myself. That way, I know I won’t get let down.” Let downs are not common to anyone that comes in contact with Williams or his music. He has helped some of the brightest stars in Pop music shine, while exposing his own light of talent burning deep inside of him. It is now time for that light to shine equally as bright, exposing the world to his talent and his ear for great music. |
